Annual Church Meeting

Annual Parochial Church Meeting
The annual meeting of the parish took place the Sunday after Easter.
Current churchwardens Barbara Smith and Mike Moulds were appointed to serve
another year. Margaret Raggett came to the end of her three year period of
office and the new churchwarden appointed is Sue James. The APCM passed a
resolution to reduce the number of Church Councillors on the Parochial
Church Council (PCC) by 3 with effect from May 2007. This will have the
effect of decreasing the total size of the PCC from 28 members to 25
members. The Rector David Hodgson said: "We hope this will find the right
balance between effective decision-making in meetings on the one hand and a
good representation of views on the other." The Parochial Church Council is
one of the key decision-making forums in the church with legal
responsibilities for the strategic direction of the church, church
governance and property similar to charitable trustees or school governors.

God at Work

Is God at work? was the question addressed at last week's special open
session of the Sonning Deanery Synod. Members of All Saints Church were
amongst those who heard Paul Valler, former Finance and Human Resources
Director of Hewlett-Packard Ltd and now an Associate Speaker with the
London Institute of Contemporary Christianity. Paul spoke about the
importance of recognising that God is in the workplace and that all
Christians are full-time Christian workers. He outlined ways churches and
Christian groups can encourage and support people to be aware of their
faith in their day -to-day work.
All Saints is planning a special Parish Communion for the Whole Church
service on April 30th on the theme of "Work" to coincide with the May Day
bank holiday weekend observed as Labour Day in many countries.

Mothering Sunday at All Saints

A moving Mothering Sunday
All Saints' 9.30am congregation were moved both to laughter and to tears at
last week's Parish Communion for Mothering Sunday in which daffodils
featured prominently. Children opened the prayers with their own endings to
the phrase "Thank you God that my mummy loves me even when I....."
Memorable amongst the hilarious endings was "burp at the table". Tears were
flowing as congregational members invited to receive a posy for a mother no
longer present streamed into the Lady Chapel to place the daffodils on the
altar.

Oldest member of All Saints' congregation passes away

The oldest member of All Saints congregation died last week at 102 years of age. Mrs Rose Alder, a Mothers Union member, passed away after a recent deterioration in her health. Mrs Alder was a regular communicant, receiving Holy Communion in her home once a month through the ministry of the extended communion team of All Saints. The Rector celebrated Holy Communion in her home on her 100th birthday in 2004.

All Saints becomes a fairt rade parish - officially!

All Saints Wokingham has for several years supported the campaign for fair trade but only at the February 2006 PCC (Parochial Church Council) meeting was a resolution passed to register officially as a fair trade parish. This means the parish will use fair trade coffee and tea at all church meetings and other products also where possible; and promote fair trade during Fairtrade Fortnight  (March) and where opportunities arise.

The proposal was brought by the PCC's World Mission and Social Justice Committee and the PCC passed the resolution nem com.

The Diocese of Oxford is seeking to become registered with the Fairtrade Foundation as a fair trade diocese. To do this it needs to have 50% of its parishes regsitered and so All Saints decsion helps towards this goal.

Efforts to persuade the Wokingham District Council to declare Wokingham a fair trade town have run into difficulties with proposals having been defeated. A new Wokingham Fairtrade Campaign group for the town is now being formed.

Churches Together in Wokingham supports the fairtrade campaign through its ecumencal Trade Justice Group which is chaired by John Tuck, the current Chair of Churches Together in Wokingham; and of which the Rector of All Saints, Rev David Hodgson, is also a member.

Members of All Saints will be taking part in the Churches Together in Wokingham Fair Trade Feast to take place at St Paul's Parish Rooms on Saturday 11th March.

House groups flourishing

in a half-year review of house groups at All Saints the news is that they
are popular and flourishing. Currently 8 different groups are running
involving over 70 people. In addition short-term listening courses are also
well-supported.
House groups - or Eureka! groups as they have been christened in All Saints
- cover a range of topics though all involve prayer and some encounter with
the Bible as part of a typical session. The nationally used Emmaus
programme has provided the framework at All Saints for several years and
groups continue to use this as a major resource.
Plans are being developed for the September 2006 launch of the next set of
Emmaus groups with a special focus on encouraging new members and those
enquiring further.
